Shaking Hands, Shaping Futures: Celebrating 10+ Years of the Hurricane Shake at SSA

When you think of middle school, you might picture textbooks, lockers, and cafeteria chatter. But walk into South Seminole Academy of Career Exploration during our annual Hurricane Shake competition, and you will see something entirely different: confident young adolescents looking adults square in the eye, delivering firm handshakes, and engaging in sophisticated professional dialogue.
For over a decade, the Hurricane Shake has been a hallmark tradition at our school. Far more than just a contest, this business soft-skills competition is a transformative experience that prepares our students to thrive in the real world.
Why Business Soft Skills Matter More Than Ever
In an increasingly digital world dominated by screens and texts, the art of face-to-face communication is becoming a rare commodity. Technical knowledge (hard skills) can get a student through an exam, but it is professional soft skills—emotional intelligence, poise, adaptability, and effective communication—that open doors to lifelong success.
By teaching students how to present themselves with confidence, handle pressure, and articulate their thoughts clearly, we are giving them a competitive edge. The Hurricane Shake proves that it is never too early to start building a professional foundation.
The Journey: From Classroom to the Global Stage
The Hurricane Shake is a rigorous, multi-round gauntlet that challenges students to step outside their comfort zones. Here is how the competition unfolds:
-
Round 1: The Whole-School Handshake: The journey begins with every single student in the school. Students must approach an adult judge, deliver a firm handshake with excellent eye contact, and introduce themselves with a poised, professional address.
-
Round 2: "Work the Room" Networking Simulation: The competition heats up as semifinalists enter a timed networking event. Surrounded by local business partners, students must introduce themselves, initiate meaningful conversation, and—crucially—appropriately exit the conversation so they can successfully network with every partner in the room before time runs out.
-
Round 3: The Gauntlet: Finalists face the ultimate test of adaptability. The Gauntlet consists of 10 rapid-fire business challenges and real-world scenarios. Students must think on their feet, react professionally, and remain calm under intense pressure, all while being evaluated by a panel of judges on their poise and problem-solving abilities.
The Ultimate Reward: The Global Amazing Shake
After weeks of intense competition, the top 6 finalists emerge. These extraordinary students earn an all-expense-paid trip to Atlanta, Georgia, to visit the Ron Clark Academy. There, they represent South Seminole Academy as they compete on the world stage at the Global Amazing Shake competition, testing their skills against the brightest young minds from across the globe.

Shaping the South Seminole Academy of Career Exploration
As a magnet school dedicated to career exploration, the Hurricane Shake is the heartbeat of our school's identity. It perfectly embodies our mission. We aren’t just asking students what they want to be when they grow up; we are actively giving them the tools to get there.
This competition bridges the gap between the classroom and the community. By inviting local business partners to judge and participate, our students get a taste of real-world expectations while building a powerful network before they even reach high school.
For over 10 years, the Hurricane Shake has proven that when you hold middle schoolers to high standards, they don't just meet them—they exceed them. We are incredibly proud of the culture of professionalism, resilience, and excellence that this competition continues to foster at South Seminole Academy.
Here’s to another decade of shaking hands and shaping the leaders of tomorrow!
