Important Update: South Seminole Academy Transitioning to SCPS Dress Code for 2026-2027

Dear South Seminole Academy Families, Staff, and Community,

At South Seminole Academy of Career Exploration, we are constantly striving to foster an inclusive, supportive, and leadership-focused environment where every student can successfully pursue their "pathway to purpose."

As the only middle school in Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) utilizing a uniform policy, our School Advisory Council (SAC) recently undertook a thorough, multi-month review process to evaluate our dress code. In November, the SAC surveyed students, parents, and staff, receiving over 375 responses. The feedback was clear:

  • 67% of overall respondents preferred adopting the general SCPS Dress Code policy.

  • This included 71% of our students73% of our teachers, and 57% of our parents.

To ensure a smooth transition, we tested this change on "Dress Code Fridays" during the school year. This trial allowed our SAC to monitor the impact, let families adjust, and clarify what is and isn't acceptable under the district guidelines.

Following the success of this trial and careful consideration of all stakeholder feedback, the SAC has officially decided to retire the uniform policy and adopt the standard SCPS Dress Code Policy for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year.

Why We Are Making This Change

While uniforms served our campus for several years, our community data and unique student demographics highlighted critical areas where the policy was creating unintended hurdles:

  • Removing Barriers for Families: Approximately 73% of our student population qualifies for Free and Reduced Lunch. For many families—especially those who enroll mid-year in our transient population—the financial and logistical requirement of buying specific uniforms created an immediate hardship.

  • Positive Starts to the School Day: Arriving at school out of uniform often resulted in verbal reminders or administrative consequences. We want to eliminate these friction points so our students can start every single morning on a positive, focused note.

  • District Alignment: Aligning with the standard SCPS dress code removes barriers to enrollment, ensuring that incoming families view South Seminole Academy as an accessible, welcoming choice from day one.

Addressing Concerns: Keeping Our Standards High

We want to directly address and reassure the families and staff members who valued and appreciated the structure of the uniform policy. Adopting the SCPS dress code will not lower our standards or expectations for student appearance, behavior, or academics.

  • Leadership is a Mindset: Our students are expected to look, act, and lead with pride every day.

  • Firm & Consistent Enforcement: The SCPS Dress Code still maintains strict, clear guidelines regarding appropriate school attire. SSA staff will firmly and consistently enforce these district standards to ensure our learning environment remains professional, respectful, and distraction-free.

We are incredibly grateful to our parents, students, and dedicated teachers for providing the feedback that guided this decision. We look forward to embarking on the 2026-2027 school year together, united in setting high standards and clearing paths for our students to thrive.

Go Hurricanes!
